Ledger Live adds Coin control: Here's why that matters.
Ledger Live version 2.11.1 (download link) adds Coin control for power users.
The coin control feature gives advanced users more granular control over their wallets. It enables them to change how and which coins are selected when making transactions. This increases their ability to manage their privacy and the network fees they will have to pay to spend their account balance.
More control over your coins

How does it work?

The account balance for Bitcoin and its derivatives consists of all the unspent transaction outputs (UTXOs) in the account. You can think of UTXOs as the coins in a regular wallet. When you receive money, you collect coins in your wallet. Then, when you want to make a payment, you get to choose which coins you pick from your wallet. Do you pick the largest coins first? Or do you want to spend all the smaller value coins to lighten up your wallet? Similar considerations can be made when creating a Bitcoin or Bitcoin derivative (altcoin) transaction.
Before the Coin Control feature was released, all transactions involving Bitcoin (and altcoins) automatically selected their coins using the First-In-First-Out (FIFO) algorithm. This strategy includes the oldest coin in the account, and when the amount is not sufficient the second-oldest coin is added, and so forth.
As of Ledger Live version 2.11.1, users are able to make use of a dedicated Coin Control tool to choose the coin selection strategy and the coins that may be spent.

Using Coin control in Ledger Live

Coin control is available in Advanced options in the Send flow
  1. Click on Send, choose an account to debit, and enter a recipient address. Click on Continue.
  2. Enter an amount and click on Advanced options. You will then see: - The currently selected, default coin selection strategy: Oldest coins first (FIFO). - A toggle to enable Replace-By-Fee (RBF). - A toggle to include coins from unconfirmed, replaceable transactions.
  3. Click on Coin control. The coin control modal opens.
  4. Select a Coin selection strategy from the dropdown menu: - Oldest coins first (FIFO). This is the default strategy that spends the oldest coins first. - Minimize fees (optimize size). This strategy tries to minimize the byte size of the transaction by spending the lowest number of UTXOs. This results in a low network fee. - Minimize future fees (merge coins), This strategy includes the maximum number of inputs so that a potential future price rise does not make smaller UTXOs economically unspendable. If the price of a crypto asset increases too much, small UTXOs may become worth less than the cost of the network fees to spend them.
  5. Select which coins may not be included in the selection by unticking their checkbox. The SELECTED indicator shows which coins will be included in the transaction. By changing the selection strategy and/or coins to include, the user has precise control over which coins end up being spent. The Coins to spend and Change to return indicators show how much is spent from and returned to the account.
  6. Click on Done to return to the Send flow to verify and send the transaction.
The coin control window lets you select the strategy as well as pick the coins. Coins marked SELECTED will be included in the transaction.

Coin status

The following statuses can be displayed for a coin:
  • Coins received in a transaction with 0 confirmations without RBF enabled: PENDING
  • Coins received in a transaction with 0 confirmations with RBF enabled: REPLACEABLE
  • Coins received in a transaction with 1337 confirmations: 1337 CONFIRMATIONS
By enabling the toggle Include coins from unconfirmed, replaceable transactions, replaceable transactions can be selected in the Coin control screen.

The Privacy use case

One of the main use cases for Coin control is to protect one’s privacy. UTXOs are, unfortunately, not perfectly fungible due to their unique history on the blockchain. Therefore, users may want to spend coins from different sources without mixing them together, because this would indicate to an outside observer of the blockchain that these addresses belong to the same account. For instance, if one were to spend coins bought on a KYC exchange, which are associated with the user’s identity, together with coins bought anonymously using cash, the anonymous coins could be linked to the user’s identity.
Another example would be that you would like to prevent spending a high-value coin for smaller purchases because this would unnecessarily show the person you’re paying how much you have. This is similar to not showing the boulanger how much is on your bank account when buying a baguette.

A few questions about blockchain

Hello blocktech!
I have a few questions about the blockchain, but I am having trouble finding information that is more than a basic overview of the blockchain. For the sake of simplicity, I am going to be referring only to the Bitcoin chain for these questions, as different chains may use different solutions.
Does every miner download the entire chain?
Given the number of transactions, it seems that this would require a lot of memory, and would increase in this respect over time.
If every miner has a copy, where did they get it?
Since there is no central server, who provides a new user with the chain? Wouldn't it take a lot of bandwidth for some random miner to send the entire chain to a new user?
Once they have the chain, how do they get updates?
Once a new block is mined, how does a person who didn't mine it get the update? Is it sent one person at a time from peer to peer?
How does a miner access the pool of unconfirmed transactions?
Again, once someone makes a transaction that is added to the pool, how do miners access the pool? How is it ensured that none of the transactions are left out of a block? If you and I both mine a block, you slightly before me, and someone makes a transaction in between, wouldn't their transaction get lost as new blocks were added on top of yours rather than mine?
If I mine a block, is my reward stored as a transaction in that block or the subsequent one?
Or is the block itself verification of the reward?
How do cryptocurrency wallets stay up to date?
If I am mining and housing a wallet on the same computer, and I mine a block shortly after someone else has beaten me to it, how is it ensured that my wallet doesn't reflect me having mined the block?
I will certainly have more questions after receiving some answers, so I appreciate anyone taking the time to explain this to me!

Groestlcoin Electrum Personal Server aims to make using Electrum Groestlcoin wallet more secure and more private. It makes it easy to connect your Electrum-GRS wallet to your own full node.
It is an implementation of the Electrum-grs server protocol which fulfils the specific need of using the Electrum-grs wallet backed by a full node, but without the heavyweight server backend, for a single user. It allows the user to benefit from all Groestlcoin Core's resource-saving features like pruning, blocks only and disabled txindex. Full node wallets are also important for privacy. Using Electrum-GRS under default configuration requires it to send (hashes of) all your Groestlcoin addresses to some server. That server can then easily spy on your transactions. Full node wallets like Groestlcoin Electrum Personal Server would download the entire blockchain and scan it for the user's own addresses, and therefore don't reveal to anyone else which Groestlcoin addresses they are interested in.
Groestlcoin Electrum Personal Server can also broadcast transactions through Tor which improves privacy by resisting traffic analysis for broadcasted transactions which can link the IP address of the user to the transaction. If enabled this would happen transparently whenever the user simply clicks "Send" on a transaction in Electrum-grs wallet.
Note: Currently Groestlcoin Electrum Personal Server can only accept one connection at a time.

How much would a Bitcoin node handling 1GB blocks cost today? I did some back-on-the-envelope calculations.

1GB blocks would be able to confirm more than 5000tx/s. That would be VISA-level scale (which handles, on average, 1736tx/s). We often hear that we shouldn't raise the blocksize because then nodes would become too expensive to run. But how expensive exactly?
We have the following costs to take into account:
For now, I'm going to assume a non-pruned full node (i.e. a node that stores all transactions of the blockchain) for personal use, i.e. for a computer built at home. I'll add in the calculations for a pruned node at the end, which would likely be the prefered option for people who merely want to verify the blockchain for themselves. If you don't care about the assumptions and calculations, you can just jump right to the end of this post. If you spotted any error, please inform me and I'll update my calculation.

Storage

There's, on average, one block every 10 minutes, that is 144 every day and 4320 blocks every thirty days. I was able to find a 3TB HDD for $47,50 on Amazon, that is $0.018/GB. Storing all blocks with all transactions of a month (4320GB) would be $78.96/mo. Prices for storage halved from 2014 to 2017, so we can assume that to half in 2022, thus we can reasonably assume it'd cost around $40/mo. in 2022.
But would such an inexpensive hard disk be able to keep up with writing all the data? I found a comparable cheap HDD which can write 127MB/s sequentially (which would be the writing mode of Bitcoin). That would be enough even for 76GB blocks!
Edit: For the UTXO set, we need very fast storage for both reading and writing. Peter__R, in his comment below, estimates this to be 1TB for 4 billion users (which would make ~46,000tx/s if everyone would make 1tx/day, so id'd require about 10GB blocks). jtoomim seems more pessimistic on that front, he says that much of that has to be in RAM. I'll add the $315 I've calculated below to account for that (which would be rather optimistic, keep in mind).

Bandwidth

Bandwidth is more complicated, because that can't just be shipped around like HDDs. I'll just take prices for my country, Germany, using the provider T-online, because I don't know how it works in the US. You can plug in your own numbers based on the calculations below.
1GB blocks/10 minute mean 1.7MB/s. However, this is an average, and we need some wiggle room for transaction spikes, for example at Christmas or Black Friday. VISA handles 150 million transactions per day, that is 1736tx/s, but can handle up to 24,000tx/s (source). So we should be able to handle 13.8x the average throughput, which would be 1.7MB/s x 13.8 = 23.46M/s, or 187.68Mbit/s. The plan on T-online for 250Mbit/s (translated) would be 54.95€/mo (plus setup minus a discount for the first 6 months which seems to cancel out so we'll ignore it), which would be $61.78/mo. This plan is an actual flatrate, so we don't have to worry about hitting any download limit.
Note, however, that we don't order bandwidth for only our Bitcoin node, but also for personal use. If we only needed 2MB/s for personal use, the plan would be 34.95€, thus our node would actually only cost the difference of 20€ per month, or $22.50/mo. Nielsen's Law of Internet Bandwidth claims that a high-end user's connection speed grows by 50% per year. If we assume this is true for pricing too, the bandwidth cost for ~200Mbit/s/mo. would go down to 12.5% (forgot how exponential growth works) 29.6% of its today's cost by 2022, which decreases our number to $2.81/mo. $6.66/mo.
Edit: jtoomim, markblundeberg and CaptainPatent point out that the node would have a much higher bandwidth for announcing transactions and uploading historical blocks. In theory, it would not be necessary to do any of those things and still be able to verify one's own transactions, by never broadcasting any transactions. That would be quite leechy behaviour, though. If we were to pick a higher data plan to get 1000MBit/s downstream and 500MBit/s upstream, it would cost 119.95€/mo., however this plan isn't widely available yet (both links in German). 500MBit/s of upstream would give us max. 21 connected nodes at transaction spikes, or max. 294 connected nodes at average load. That would cost $39.85 in 2022 (with correct exponential growth).

CPU/Memory

CPU/Memory will be bought once and can then run for tens of years, so we'll count these as setup costs. The specs needed, of course, depend on the optimization of the node software, but we'll assume the current bottlenecks will have been removed once running a node actually becomes demanding hardware-wise.
This paper establishes that a 2.4GHz Intel Westmere (Xeon E5620) CPU can verify 71000 signatures per second... which can be bought for $32.88 a pair on Ebay (note: this CPU is from Q1'10). We'd need to verify 76659tx/s at spikes (taking the 13.8x number), so that pair of CPUs (handle 142,000tx/s) seem to just fit right in (given one signature per tx). We'd also have to account for multiple signatures per transaction and all the other parts of verification of transactions, but it seems like the CPU costs are neglegible anyway if we don't buy the freshest hardware available. ~$100 at current prices seem reasonable. Given Moore's Law, we can assume that prices for CPUs half every two years (transistor count x1.4162), so in three years, the CPU(s) should cost around $35.22 ($100/1.4163).
For memory, we again have to take into account the transaction spikes. If we're very unlucky, and transactions spike and there won't be a block for ~1h, the mempool can become very large. If we take the factor of 13.8x from above, and 1h of unconfirmed transactions (20,000,000tx usually, 276,000,000tx on spikes), we'd need 82.8GB (for 300B per transaction).
I found 32GB of RAM (with ECC) for $106, so three of those give us 96GB of RAM for $318 and plenty remaining space for building hash trees, connection management and the operating system. Buying used hardware doesn't seem to decrease the cost significantly (we actually do need a lot of RAM, compared to CPU power).
Price of RAM seems to decrease by a factor of x100 every 10 years (x1.58510), so we can expect 96GB to cost around $79.89 ($318/1.5853) in 2022.
Of course, CPU and memory need to be compatible, which I haven't taken into account. Chug a mainboard (~$150) and a power supply (~$50) into the mix, and the total would be just over $600 for today's prices. Even if mainboard and power supply prices remain the same, we'd still only have to pay around $315 for the whole setup in 2022.

Electricity

I found the following power consumptions:
So we'd have 129W 147.6W + N*6W. Electricity cost average at 12ct/kWh in the US, in Germany this is higher at 30.22ct/kWh. In the US, it would cost $11.14 $12.75 + N*$0.52 (P*12ct/kWh / 1000 * 24h/day *30days / 100ct/$), in Germany 28.06€ 32.11€ + N*1.30€.
At the end of the first year, it would cost $20.12 $21.73/mo. in the US and 50.52€ 54.57€/mo. in Germany.
At the end of the second year, it would cost $29.11 $30.72/mo. for the US and 72.98€ 77.03€/mo. for Germany. It increases by $8.98/mo. per year in the US and by 22.46€/mo. per year in Germany.
Electricity prices in Germany have increased over time due to increased taxation; in the US the price increase has been below inflation rate the last two decades. As it's difficult to predict price changes here, I'm going to assume prices will remain the same.

Conclusion

In summary, we get:
If we add everything up, for today's prices, we get (E: updated all following numbers, but only changed slightly) $132/mo. (US), $187/mo. (DE) for the second year and $71.92/mo. $78/mo. (US), $115.79/mo. $124/mo. (DE) in 2022.
It definitely is quite a bit of money, but consider what that machine would actually do; it would basically do the equivalent of VISA's payment verification multiple times over, which is an amazing feat. Also, piano lessons cost around $50-$100 each, so if we consider a Bitcoin hobbyist, he would still pay much less for his hobby than a piano player, who'd pay about $400 per month. So it's entirely reasonable to assume that even if we had 1GB blocks, there would still be lots of people running full-nodes just so.
How about pruned nodes? Here, we only have to store the Unspent Transaction Output Set (UTXO set), which currently clocks in at 2.8GB. If blocks get 1000 times bigger, we can assume the UTXO set to become 2.8TB. I'll assume ordinary HDD's aren't goint to cut it for reading/writing the UTXO set at that scale, so we'll take some NVMe SSDs for that, currently priced at $105/TB. The Rehabilitation Trustee may deem all acts conducted with my/our Passwords as mine/our act; and MTGOX and the Rehabilitation Trustee are not liable in any respect for any Damages arising out of or in connection with insufficient management, erroneous use, divulgence, third party use, illegal use, or otherwise of the Passwords, and I/we will not make any claim for damages or compensation, or make any other claim with respect to such Damages against MTGOX or the Rehabilitation Trustee.
5. 私/当社は、再生管財人が定めている又は今後定める、再生管財人が用意した方式・方法による届出・通知及びこれに関連する事項を行う際のルール(今後の変更を含む。)を理解した上でこれに従うものとし、当該ルールに違反し、又は違反しようとしたことに起因又は関連して生じるあらゆる損害等について、MTGOX及び再生管財人は一切の責任を負わず、私/当社はMTGOX及び再生管財人に対して当該損害等に関して損害賠償請求、補償請求その他一切の請求をしないこと。 I/We will familiarize myself/ourselves with and follow current rules or future rules (as amended from time to time) for any filing/notifying with the form/method the Rehabilitation Trustee provided and anything related thereto stipulated, by the Rehabilitation Trustee; and MTGOX and the Rehabilitation Trustee are not liable in any respect for any Damages arising out of or in connection with any breach of or any attempted breach of the rules, and I/we will not make any claim for damages or compensation, or make any other claim with respect to such Damages against MTGOX or the Rehabilitation Trustee.
6. 他のウェブサイトからMTGOXのウェブサイトへのリンクが提供されている場合においても、MTGOXのウェブサイト以外のウェブサイト及びそこから得られる情報並びにそれに起因又は関連して生じる損害等について、MTGOX及び再生管財人は一切の責任を負わず、私/当社はMTGOX及び再生管財人に対して当該損害等に関して損害賠償請求、補償請求その他一切の請求をしないこと。 MTGOX and the Rehabilitation Trustee are not liable in any respect for any website other than MTGOX’s website, any information obtained therefrom, and any Damages arising out of or in connection with the same, notwithstanding that MTGOX’s website may be linked on another website, and I/we will not make any claim for damages or compensation, or make any other claim with respect to such Damages against MTGOX or the Rehabilitation Trustee.
7. 私/当社と他の再生債権者その他の者との間において生じた取引、連絡、紛争等については、私/当社の責任において処理及び解決するものとし、かかる事項及びそれに起因又は関連して生じるあらゆる損害等について、MTGOX及び再生管財人は一切の責任を負わず、私/当社はMTGOX及び再生管財人に対して当該損害等に関して損害賠償請求、補償請求その他一切の請求をしないこと。 I/we will, at my/our responsibility, handle and resolve any and all transactions, communication, disputes, among others, arising between me/us, another rehabilitation creditor, or any other person; and MTGOX and the Rehabilitation Trustee are not liable in any respect for any relevant matter and any Damages arising out thereof or in connection therewith, and I/we will not make any claim for damages or compensation, or make any other claim with respect to such Damages against MTGOX or the Rehabilitation Trustee.
8. 法律、政令、法令、命令、通達、条例、ガイドラインその他の規制(以下「法令等」という。)又は消費税を含む税制の将来の制定又は変更に起因又は関連して生じるあらゆる損害等について、MTGOX及び再生管財人は一切の責任を負わず、私/当社は、MTGOX及び再生管財人に対して当該損害等に関して損害賠償請求、補償請求その他一切の請求をしないこと。また、法令等又は消費税を含む税制の将来の制定又は変更が過去に遡及した場合に、これに起因又は関連して生じるあらゆる損害等について、MTGOX及び再生管財人は一切の責任を負わず、私/当社はMTGOX及び再生管財人に対して当該損害等に関して損害賠償請求、補償請求その他一切の請求をしないこと。 MTGOX and the Rehabilitation Trustee are not liable in any respect for any Damages arising out of or in connection with a future enactment or amendment to a law, cabinet order, ordinance, order, directive, bylaw, guideline, or any other regulation (“Laws”) or the tax system, including consumption tax; and I/we will not make any claim for damages or compensation, or make any other claim with respect to such Damages against MTGOX or the Rehabilitation Trustee. Further, MTGOX and the Rehabilitation Trustee are not liable in any respect for any Damages arising out of or in connection with any future enactment or amendment with a retroactive effect on Laws or the tax system including consumption tax, and I/we will not make any claim for damages or compensation, or make any other claim with respect to such Damages against MTGOX or the Rehabilitation Trustee.
9. 裁判所又は再生管財人が、再生管財人が私/当社のメールアドレスと認めるメールアドレス宛に電子メールにより通知を送信することによって、私/当社に対する適法な通知があったものとみなすこと。当該メールアドレスの不備等(メールアドレスの記載漏れを含む。)に起因又は関連して、当該メールアドレスに宛てた電子メールを送信することができず又は電子メールが到達しない場合(到達が確認できない場合を含む。)であっても同様とすること。 An appropriate notification is deemed to have been made to me/us if the court or the Rehabilitation Trustee sends a notification via email to the email address which is considered to be my/our email address by the Rehabilitation Trustee. The same applies notwithstanding that, due to, or in connection with, an inadequacy, inaccurateness or incompleteness, or any other issue (including omission of the email address), in or with that email address, an email addressed to that email address cannot be sent or the email is not delivered including where receipt is unconfirmed.
10.私/当社が本届出書を利用して行った再生債権の届出の内容について、再生管財人が裁判所その他必要な第三者に提出すること。 The Rehabilitation Trustee may submit the proof of rehabilitation claim filed by me/us using this form to the court and other third parties as necessary.
11.私/当社は、本民事再生手続においてパスワード等を用いて入手することができる一切の情報(他の再生債権者に関する情報を含むが、これに限られない。)を、本民事再生手続における権利行使の目的にのみ使用することとし、第三者に提供、開示又は漏洩しないこと。 I/We will use information (including, but not limited to, information related to any other rehabilitation creditors) acquired by using the Passwords in the Civil Rehabilitation Proceedings only for the purpose of exercising rights in the Civil Rehabilitation Proceedings and will not provide, disclose, or divulge such information to any third party.
12.私/当社の本民事再生手続における議決権の額は、再生管財人が提示する次の為替レートによって、円換算されて評価されること。 The amount of my/our voting rights in the Civil Rehabilitation Proceedings is computed through conversion to Japanese Yen (JPY) using the following exchange rates provided by the Rehabilitation Trustee:

13.本民事再生手続においては、ビットコイン等の返還請求権は非金銭債権として取り扱われ、当該返還請求権に係る遅延損害金は生じないこととすること。 In the Civil Rehabilitation Proceedings, the right to claim for return of Bitcoin Etc. is treated as a non-monetary claim, and no delay damages pertaining to such right to claim for return will accrue.
14.再生管財人の私/当社への弁済(金銭及びビットコイン等の弁済を含む。)及びこれに関連する行為が、日本国の外国為替及び外国貿易法、米国財務省の金融制裁(OFAC規制)その他私/当社に関して適用のあるいかなる法令等にも抵触しないこと。再生管財人は、再生管財人の実施する私/当社への弁済及びこれに関連する行為が、日本国外の法令等に抵触しないことをいかなる意味においても保証しないこと。これらの法令等への抵触に起因又は関連して生じるあらゆる損害等について、MTGOX及び再生管財人は一切の責任を負わず、私/当社はMTGOX及び再生管財人に対して当該損害等に関して損害賠償請求、補償請求その他一切の請求をしないこと。再生管財人の私/当社への弁済に起因又は関連して私/当社に課される一切の公租公課(当該弁済の態様によって公租公課の額が増減する場合を含む。)は、私/当社が負担し、当該公租公課又はその増減に起因又は関連して生じるあらゆる損害等について、MTGOX及び再生管財人は一切の責任を負わず、私/当社はMTGOX及び再生管財人に対して当該損害等に関して損害賠償請求、補償請求その他一切の請求をしないこと。 Any payment (including payment of cash and Bitcoin Etc.) to me/us by the Rehabilitation Trustee and any act related thereto do not conflict with the Foreign Exchange and Foreign Trade Act of Japan, the United States Department of the Treasury’s financial sanctions (OFAC regulations) and any other applicable Laws. The Rehabilitation Trustee does not guarantee, in any respect, that payment to me/us by the Rehabilitation Trustee and any act related thereto do not conflict with Laws outside of Japan. MTGOX and the Rehabilitation Trustee are not liable in any respect for any Damages arising out of or in connection with any conflict with any applicable Laws, and I/we will not make any claim for damages or compensation, or make any other claim with respect to such Damages against MTGOX or the Rehabilitation Trustee. I/We will bear all taxes and other public charges (including any increases or decreases in the amount of taxes and other public charges due to the manner of the payment) levied on me/us arising out of or in connection with any payment to me/us by the Rehabilitation Trustee; and MTGOX and the Rehabilitation Trustee are not liable in any respect for any Damages arising out of or in connection with such taxes and other public charges and increase or decrease thereof, and I/we will not make any claim for damages or compensation, or make any other claim with respect to such Damages against MTGOX or the Rehabilitation Trustee.
15.再生管財人が、仮想通貨取引所(日本国内の仮想通貨交換業者を含むが、これに限られない。以下同じ。)又は金融機関(資金移動業者を含む。以下同じ。)に開設された再生債権者の口座に対して弁済金を振り込む場合、私/当社は、再生管財人の指定する方法により届け出た氏名・名称と同一名義の仮想通貨取引所又は金融機関の口座で受け取ること。 If the Rehabilitation Trustee transfers the money for distribution to an account of a rehabilitation creditor opened at a cryptocurrency exchange (including, but not limited to, cryptocurrency exchangers in Japan; the same applies below) or a financial institution (including fund transfer operators; the same applies below), I/we will receive the same in the account at the cryptocurrency exchange or the financial institution under the same name as that name I/we notified in the manner designated by the Rehabilitation Trustee.
16.私/当社が再生管財人の指定する仮想通貨取引所に開設した口座でビットコイン等及び/又は金銭で弁済を受ける場合には、次の各事項。 If I/we receive payment in Bitcoin Etc. and/or in cash in an account opened at the cryptocurrency exchange designated by the Rehabilitation Trustee, the following applies:
(a) 私/当社は、送付先等の必要情報を正確に提供しなければならず、その誤りから結果的にビットコイン等及び/又は金銭を受領できなかったとしても、それに起因又は関連して生じるあらゆる損害等について、MTGOX及び再生管財人は一切の責任を負わず、私/当社はMTGOX及び再生管財人に対して当該損害等に関して損害賠償請求、補償請求その他一切の請求をしないこと。 I/we must accurately provide necessary information about my/our accounts, among others, and, notwithstanding that an error therein results in my/our not receiving Bitcoin, Etc. or cash, MTGOX and the Rehabilitation Trustee are not liable in any respect for any Damages arising out of or in connection with such non-receipt, and I/we will not make any claim for damages or compensation, or make any other claim with respect to such Damages against MTGOX or the Rehabilitation Trustee.
(b) 再生管財人がビットコイン等及び/又は金銭を当該仮想通貨取引所に交付した時点で弁済が完了し、MTGOX及び再生管財人の弁済義務は消滅するものとし、再生管財人による当該仮想通貨取引所へのビットコイン等及び/又は金銭の交付後、私/当社が何らかの理由(仮想通貨のブロックチェーンの不具合、仮想通貨取引所のシステムの不具合を含むが、これらに限られない。)により仮想通貨取引所からのビットコイン等及び/又は金銭の適切な弁済を受けることができなかったとしても、それに起因又は関連して生じるあらゆる損害等について、MTGOX及び再生管財人は一切の責任を負わず、私/当社はMTGOX及び再生管財人に対して当該損害等に関して損害賠償請求、補償請求その他一切の請求をしないこと。 The instant the Rehabilitation Trustee sends Bitcoin, Etc. or cash to the cryptocurrency exchange, the payment by MTGOX and the Rehabilitation Trustee is deemed complete, and the payment obligation of MTGOX and the Rehabilitation Trustee is deemed to be discharged; and, after Bitcoin Etc. or cash has been sent to the cryptocurrency exchange by the Rehabilitation Trustee, notwithstanding that I/we fail to receive appropriate payment of Bitcoin Etc. or cash from the cryptocurrency exchange for any reason (including, but not limited to, a malfunction in the blockchain of the cryptocurrency or a system malfunction at the cryptocurrency exchange), MTGOX and the Rehabilitation Trustee are not liable in any respect for any Damages arising out of or in connection with such failure, and I/we will not make any claim for damages or compensation, or make any other claim with respect to such Damages against MTGOX or the Rehabilitation Trustee.
17.私/当社が金融機関の口座において金銭で弁済を受ける場合には、次の各事項。 If I/we receive cash in an account at a financial institution, the following applies:

ii. 私/当社以外の情報源(身元証明サービス機関を含むが、これに限られない。)から収集する私/当社の情報 information concerning me/us provided by an information source (including, but not limited to, organizations providing ID verification services) other than myself/ourselves;
iii. 本破産手続において、私/当社が本破産手続の破産管財人に提供した一切の情報 all information that I/we provided to the bankruptcy trustee of the Bankruptcy Proceedings;
iv. 私/当社が、MTGOXに提供した一切の情報 all information that I/we provided to MTGOX; and
v. その他再生管財人が適正な方法により取得し、又は今後取得する情報 any other information acquired, or to be acquired going forward, by the Rehabilitation Trustee using an appropriate method
(b) 再生管財人が、収集した上記(a)の情報を、以下の目的で日本国内外で管理及び利用すること。 The Rehabilitation Trustee may manage and use collected information stated in (a) above for the purposes below in and outside of Japan.
i. 再生債権の届出、調査、再生計画の立案、再生計画に基づく弁済その他の本民事再生手続の適切な遂行 filing proofs of rehabilitation claim, investigations of rehabilitation claims, drafting a rehabilitation plan, distribution in accordance with a rehabilitation plan, or any other appropriate execution of the Civil Rehabilitation Proceedings;
ii. 公益的な目的のためにする、日本国内外の行政官庁・捜査機関・司法機関への上記(a)の情報の開示又は提供 disclosing or providing information stated in (a) above to any government office, any investigation agency, or any judicial agency in or outside of Japan for the purpose of serving public interests; and
iii. その他上記目的に付随する目的 any other purposes incidental to the above purposes.
(c) 再生管財人が、上記(b)の目的のため、上記(a)の情報を、第三者(以下の者を含むが、これらに限られない。)に開示又は提供する場合があること。これらの第三者には、①米国、②カナダ、③イギリス、④私/当社が所在する国及び⑤私/当社が再生債権の弁済の受領のために利用する金融機関又は仮想通貨取引所が所在する国に、それぞれ所在する第三者が含まれること。 The Rehabilitation Trustee may disclose or provide information stated in (a) above for the purpose of (b) above to any third party (including, but not limited to, the persons below). 25.私が死亡した場合、本民事再生手続との関係では、再生管財人が、日本の法令等及び実務に従って、相続に関する各種関係資料の提出を求め、また、誰を再生債権者として取り扱うかについて判断すること、及び、当該判断に起因又は関連して生じるあらゆる損害等について、MTGOX及び再生管財人は一切の責任を負わず、私及び私の相続人はMTGOX及び再生管財人に対して当該損害等に関して損害賠償請求、補償請求その他一切の請求をしないこと。 For the purpose of the Civil Rehabilitation Proceedings, in the event that I died, the Rehabilitation Trustee may, in accordance with the Laws and practices of Japan, request for relevant evidence and explanation on the inheritance and determine who to be treated as the rehabilitation creditor; and MTGOX and the Rehabilitation Trustee are not liable in any respect for any Damages arising out of or in connection with such determination, and I and my heir(s)/successor(s) will not make any claim for damages or compensation, or make any other claim with respect to such Damages against MTGOX or the Rehabilitation Trustee.

I have tried (almost) every mobile wallet

I have tested just about every mobile wallet on Google play now. Here is how I test it: I download the app, back it up, load some coin into it and send it back out. What have I missed? Anything you can recommend? Here is why I don't like a single app so far in no particular order : Samurai: No usd conversion No notifications
Blockchain: Lagging VPN or mobile data Very slow to load walances even on wifi
Enjin : Must type pw every time No notifications Slow to show transactions
Mycelium: Ugly No notifications

  1. If your favorite wallet has not yet implemented SegWit, kindly ask them to do so immediately. In the meantime start using a wallet that has already implemented SegWit.

There are 2 different Segwit address formats.
  • p2sh - starting with a "3..."
  • bech32 - starting "bc1..."
Not many wallets/exchanges support bech32 yet and will claim the address is invalid if you try to send to it. bech32 ("native Segwit") is a mildly better solution compared to p2sh.

  • The Bitcoin core wallet does not yet have a GUI for its SegWit functionality. Download Electrum v3.0.3 to generate a SegWit address.
    A transaction between two SegWit addresses is a SegWit transaction.
    A transaction sent from a SegWit address to a non-SegWit address is a SegWit transaction.
    A transaction sent from a non-SegWit address to a SegWit address is NOT a SegWit transaction. You can send a SegWit Transaction if the sending address is a SegWit address.

What wallet are you using to "batch your sends"? And how can I do that?
  • Using Electrum, the "Tools" menu option: "Pay to many".
    Just enter your receive addresses and the amounts for each, and you can send multiple transactions for nearly the price of one.
Why doesn't the Core Wallet yet support SegWit?
  • The Core Wallet supports SegWit, but its GUI doesn't. The next update will likely have GUI support built-in
Why isn't a large exchange like Coinbase SegWit ready & deployed when much smaller exchanges already are? Why do they default to high fees? Where is the leadership there?

Is there a way of downloading the current state of the mempool or an example of it?

Hi everyone,
I would like to test some algorithms to assemble a candidate block and also do some statistical analysis. In order to do this, I need an example of the mempool transactions. However, I wasn't able to find any simple way of downloading it. My best attempt so far was to download the data from the blockchain.info API accessing this link: https://blockchain.info/unconfirmed-transactions?format=json. However, I think the number of transactions is limited by 10 and usually the mempool has more than 10 thousand transactions. I also tried https://www.smartbit.com.au/txs/unconfirmed and https://blockchair.com/bitcoin/mempool/transactions, but they also limit the number of transactions and the access to the some important data, such as ancestor, is not so direct. The only solution I found so far was to install bitcoin core, download the entire chain (which I want to avoid) and only then be able to get the mempool transaction data. Anyway, I don't need to right now to get access to the mempool. I only need an example of a snapshot of it. Could anyone help me on this task?

  1. If your favorite wallet has not yet implemented SegWit, kindly ask them to do so immediately. In the meantime start using a wallet that has already implemented SegWit.
  2. If your favorite exchange has not yet implemented SegWit, try to avoid making any further purchases of bitcoin at that exchange and politely inform them that if they do not enable SegWit within 30-days they will lose your business. Sign-up for an account at a SegWit deployed/ready exchange now and initiate the verification process so you'll be ready to bail
  3. Help educate newcomers to bitcoin about the transaction issue, steer them towards SegWit wallets from day one, and encourage them to avoid ever purchasing bitcoin through non-SegWit ready exchanges that are harming bitcoin

BACKGROUND
Segregated Witness (SegWit) was activated on the Bitcoin network August 24 2017 as a soft fork that is backward compatible with previous bitcoin transactions (Understanding Segregated Witness). Since that time wallets and exchanges have been slow to deploy SegWit, and the majority of users have not made the switch themselves.
On Dec 18 2017 Subhan Nadeem has pointed out that: If every transaction in the Bitcoin network was a SegWit transaction today, blocks would contain up to 8,000 transactions, and the 138,000 unconfirmed transaction backlog would disappear instantly. Transaction fees would be almost non-existent once again.
Mass SegWit use alone could empty the mempool, result in blocks that are not completely full, and make it possible to include transactions with $0 fee once again.
On Jan 11 2018 when BTC sends went offline at Coinbase the mempool began to rapidly empty. Later in the day when service was restored there was a sharp spike up in the mempool. Subsequently, that afternoon Brian Armstrong finally had to break his silence on the topic and admitted Coinbase is working on SegWit but has still not deployed it. It appears that this is an important data point that indicates if just a few major exchanges would deploy SegWit the high fees bitcoin is experiencing would be eliminated.
SegWit is just one technique available to exchanges and users to reduce pressure on the Bitcoin network. You can make the switch to SegWit on your next transaction, and pressure exchanges to deploy SegWit NOW along with other actions that will reduce their transaction impact on the network. You can help by taking one or more of the action steps below.

If you are a long-term holder and really have no reason to move your bitcoins at this time, wait until the mempool starts to clear and transaction fees go down before moving your bitcoins to a SegWit address or SegWit friendly exchange.
BEYOND SEGWIT - BATCHING, PAYMENT CHANNELS, LIGHTNING
Batching is another great way that exchanges can reduce their fees. See: Saving up to 80% on Bitcoin transaction fees by batching payments. Despite the benefits of batching, some exchanges have been slow to implement it. Users should demand this or walk.
Beyond SegWit & Batching, Lightning Network integration will have even more effect. Lightning is now active and exchanges could setup payment channels between each other so that on-chain transactions need not take place. Which two bitcoin exchanges will be the first to establish a lightning channel between themselves and offer free/instant transfers between them for their customers? This will happen in 2018

Why is SegWit adoption going so slowly? Is it a time-consuming process, is there risk involved, is it laziness, or something else?
SegWit will require some extra work to be done right and securely. Also, most exchanges let the user pay the fee, and up to now users have not been overly concerned about fees so for some exchanges it hasn't been a priority.
Once Segwit is FULLY adopted, what do we see the fees/transaction times going to?
Times stay the same - fees will go down. How much and for how long depends on what the demand for transactions will be at that time.
What determines bitcoin transaction fees, to begin with?
Fees are charged per byte of data and are bid up by users. Miners will typically include the transaction with the highest fee/byte first.

What are the two SegWit address formats and why do they exist?
It's been a challenge for wallet developers to implement SegWit in a way that users can easily and without too much disruption migrate from legacy to SegWit addresses. The first wallets to enable SegWit addresses – Ledger, Trezor, Core, GreenAddress – use so-called “nested P2SH addresses.” This means they take the existing Pay 2 Script Hash address – starting with a “3” – and put a SegWit address into it. This enables a high grade of compatibility to exist wallets as every wallet is familiar with these addresses, but it is a workaround which results in SegWit transactions needing around 10 percent more space than they otherwise would.
Electrum 3.0 was the first wallet to use bech32 addresses instead of nested p2sh addresses.

P2SH Segwit addresses can be sent to using older Bitcoin software with no Segwit support. This supports backward compatibility
bech32 can only be sent to from newer Bitcoin software that support bech32. Ex: Electrum

Why did ThePirateBay put up two Bitcoin donation addresses on their frontpage, one bech32 and one not?
The address starting with a "3..." is a P2SH SegWit address that can be sent BTC from any bitcoin address including a legacy address. The address starting with a "bc1..." is a bech32 SegWit address that can only be sent to from newer wallets that support bech32.
